Athens:

The teams and drivers have been putting the final touches to their preparations ahead of this weekend's Acropolis rally, the latest leg of the 2004 World Rally Championship. One man determined to make a good showing in Greece is Marcus Gronholm. The Finn won the previous rally in this year's championship, in Cyprus three weeks ago, but was later disqualified - a decision that cost him the overall lead in the drivers' standings. Gronholm's bad luck in Cyprus gave Citroen's Sebastien Loeb the 10 points for victory, and the Frenchman goes into this weekend's event on top of the drivers' championship by just a point from Estonian Markko Martin. But Martin is confident heading into the rally. His team, Ford, have won in Greece for the past four years running, and his own victory here last year was the first of his World Rally Championship career. Also keen to make his mark this weekend is reigning world champion Petter Solberg. The Norwegian is currently third in the standings, seven points behind leader Loeb, and four ahead of fourth-placed Gronholm. (AP)
