Atar/Mauritani/Kiffa: On a day overshadowed by the tragic death of twice Dakar winner Fabrizio Meoni, Germany's Jutta Kleinschmidt won her first stage in the 2005 Dakar Rally on Tuesday. Kleinschmidt scored a narrow victory in leg 11 over French drivers Luc Alphand and Stephane Peterhansel. Kleinschmidt steered her VW Toareg through a shortened 400 kilometre (250 mile) stage from Atar in Mauritainia to Kiffa in Mali in 5 hours, 29 minutes and 37 seconds. She was just over a minute ahead of Alphand and 2 minutes 42 seconds faster than Peterhansel, who retains an overall lead of 20 minutes. In Meoni's motorcycle class, Marc Coma won his first leg of the rally ahead of overall leader Cyril Despres of France.
