France:

Marseille fired manager Albert Emon on Tuesday after only one win in nine games and hired Eric Gerets to replace him, the club said.

Although Emon guided Marseille to second place in the French league last season -sealing a spot in the European Champions League, the club has been outscored 12-7, lost three of its last four and is in 16th place, 12 points behind league-leading Nancy.

"The team needs a new direction," Marseille president Pape Diouf said on the club's Web site late Tuesday night. "Eric Gerets is the coach who can bring it to us."

Gerets had 94 caps for Belgium as a rugged defender and won six championships with PSV Eindhoven.

He also played for AC Milan before taking up his first coaching role with Belgian side Liege in 1992.

He then coached PSV to Dutch titles in 2000 and 2001 and recently won the Turkish league with Galatasaray, edging Istanbul rival Fenerbahce on the final day of the 2005-06 season.

"His experience and his career, be it in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany or Turkey, are qualities which will help our club achieve the objectives it has set," Diouf said.

Diouf praised Emon and said the decision was harder to make because of his long ties with the club. Emon played for Marseille as a striker between 1968-1977. He took over as coach from Jean Fernandez at the start of last season.

"It's a difficult decision to take in regards to the friendship we have with Albert Emon and the work accomplished," Diouf said.

French reports had speculated that Emon would be replaced by either Bruno Metsu or former France boss Jacques Santini.
