Seville, Spain:

Alexander Kerzhakov headed in the winning goal on Thursday to give Sevilla a 2-1 win over Tottenham in the first leg of the UEFA Cup quarterfinals.

The match was also the second in consecutive nights to have English fans battling police in the stands.

Kerzhakov scored in the 37th minute, nodding in a headed cross from Julien Escude.

Early lead

Robbie Keane had given Tottenham the lead in the second minute, but the Spanish team equalized in the 19th after Frederic Kanoute converted a disputed penalty against his former team.

"We'll take 2-1 back to White Hart Lane and look forward to the game there," Keane said. "We always score goals, it's not over. We are very much in this game."

Keane, taking a pass from strike partner Dimitar Berbatov, had his initial right-foot shot blocked by Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop, but the Tottenham captain scored off the rebound with his other foot.

Crucial penalty

Sevilla was struggling to find an equalizer when Adriano Correia was awarded a penalty in the 18th after being brought down by Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The England goalkeeper appeared to touch the ball before making contact with Adriano, however.

"I clearly got two hands on the ball," Robinson said. "The referee said to me afterwards, 'You've taken the ball and you've taken the man.' Surely that's a fair challenge?

"At that stage in the game it's hard for us. For them to get back into the game like that was disappointing."

Shortly after Kanoute's goal, violence erupted in the stands as the visiting fans ripped up plastic seats and hurled them at Spanish police, who fought back with night sticks.

Sevilla had another penalty claim dismissed in 26th when Pascal Chimbonda challenged Kerzhakov.

Within a minute, Robinson was at full stretch to block a powerful strike by Jesus Navas.

Sevilla remain in contention for three trophies. It is second in the Spanish league and in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.
