Manchester United take on Lyon

Manchester:

Manchester United play French champions Olympique Lyonnais today in the Champions League, knowing victory would take them through to the knockout stages. The match at Old Trafford also marks Sir Alex Ferguson's 1,000th game as United manager, in just over 18 years at the club. "We hope our home form holds up. It's been excellent in the last few years, and to win the group I think we have to win the home game," Ferguson said. Heavy stakes Opponents Lyon have already qualified for the last 16 of the tournament. The French champions are two points ahead of Manchester United at the top of Group D, with just two games to play. Lyon know that a victory today will guarantee them group victory and a seeding for the second round, and the players are keen to win the group before their final match against Sparta Prague. However, even if Lyon beat Manchester United, the English side will still go through if Sparta Prague beat Fenerbahce in the other Group D match. Consistent victory But Ferguson is looking further ahead, and he will not be happy until his side have won Europe's biggest trophy for a third time, to go with their victories in 1967 and 1999. Meanwhile, Lyon coach Paul Le Guen has hinted at a defensive approach today, although his team has scored 11 goals so far in their four Group D matches. Lyon were the better side in the first match in France, leading 2-0 at the Stade Gerland in September, before Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice to earn a draw. But Manchester United will still be strong favourites to win, and in the process, hand Sir Alex Ferguson a double celebration. (AP)
