Mumbai:
National Football League and Federation Cup champions Mahindra United have been boosted by the signing up of three foreign recruits Ghana's Yusuf Yakubu, Filipe Vaz Azevedo of Portugal and Canadian Tony Menezes ahead of their Durand Cup campaign in Delhi. Ghanaian Yakubu, who was on the Mahindras rolls last year when they had a successful run in the NFL, and Filipe are to start with the glamour Mumbai outfit's lung opener on Sunday, club president Alan Durante told reporters. The indisposed Filipe is expected to start from the third match of the Durand Cup, Durante said, adding that the trio will play for the top Mumbai club in the 2006-07 season. Menezes is a Canadian born Brazilian defender/medio who has represented Canada 27 times. Born in Mississauga, Ontario, the six-foot, 31-year-old lives in Toronto. He has also played for several seasons for Botafogo in Brazil and for Ganzu in China in 2001. He came to Mumbai a month ago and spent days with the team. "I went back home, but my head was in India. I decided to take the offer. Brazil league is the most difficult, he said. Menezes' last stint was with the Toronto Lynx in the United States first division league. Durante, who had indicated earlier that talks were on with Yakubu to retain the dashing African frontliner on the Mahindra United rolls, said they had to wait as the Home Ministry took two and a half months to give the Ghanaian footballer visa. He landed in Mumbai only two days ago, Durante explained. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
