Buenos Aires:

Federal police said on Friday they have detained four suspected River Plate hooligans wanted in connection with the August 7 shooting death of a fan from a rival River gang.

Police said those detained were being held for questioning by a judge about the slaying of Martin Gonzalo Acro and they are seeking ten others.

The death has renewed worries in Argentina about the inability of soccer officials to better police the country's most popular sport.

Frequent fan violence in stadiums, coupled with the shooting death and other violent incidents this year, have prompted renewed calls for officials to crack down on the so-called "barra bravas" that are often blamed for disturbances.

Police said they have been investigating two rival groups fighting for supremacy within River Plate's hooligan fan base.

Such groups are reported to be found alongside most of Argentina's first-division teams, controlling lucrative informal street stadium parking concessions and unofficial souvenir sales among other unregulated businesses.

Judge Jose Luis Rodriguez ordered the detentions and police reported those detained were arrested amid a series of raids in around the capital and in central Cordoba province. The killing of Gonzalo, 29, remains unsolved.
