Rio de Janeiro:
Struggling Flamengo gave their supporters something to cheer about when they beat Ponte Preta 1-0 at home in the Brazilian Championship on Wednesday. Ponte Preta began confidently enough, and midfielder Iran came within inches of giving them the lead in the third minute with a superb long-range strike. However, the rest of the first half was dominated by the home side. Breaking the deadlock Flamengo should have gone ahead when Jean's cross found an unmarked Obina in the area. But the striker failed to capitalise. Flamengo broke the scoreless deadlock in first half injury time. Some clever lead-up work by Renato set up Jonatas who, despite being off balance, managed to place his shot perfectly into the bottom corner of the net. Substitute Mezenga came close to doubling Flamengo's lead two minutes into the second half. But his left foot strike was well saved by Lauro. Few chances Ponte Preta were given few chances by Flamengo's solid defence. The closest they came to an equaliser was when Kahe's header sailed over the crossbar. Both sides were having trouble getting their shots on target in a scrappy second half. A successful night for the home side almost turned sour when fans clashed with police on the terraces. Flamengo held on to win 1-0, earning them three much-needed Championship points. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
