FC Barcelona midfielder Deco was suspended for two games by the Spanish soccer federation on Tuesday after being sent off during a league game with Athletic Bilbao. Deco pulled Carlos Gurpegi's hair after the Bilbao midfielder had lifted him off the ground by his shirt in the closing stages of Sunday's match. He had to be escorted off the field by Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard. Barcelona won the match 2-1. The Portugal midfielder will miss Sunday's league game against Alaves and next week's Copa del Rey first-leg quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid or Zaragoza. Barcelona said on its web site that it will appeal the suspension, alleging that Deco had previously received a series of blows from Gurpegi. The incident sparked several clashes between the players, among which Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o was caught by TV cameras spitting at Bilbao defender Unai Exposito just before the final whistle. Bilbao coach Javier Clemente then made allegedly racist remarks about the spitting incident. The federation did not punish Eto'o or Clemente on Tuesday although it may be obliged to do so as the country's Higher Sports Council has requested action. (AP)
