Copa America: Peru advance to quarters

New Delhi:

Three sides managed to enter the quarter-finals of Copa America matches on Tuesday night. Peru's 2-2 draw with Bolivia and hosts Venezuela's nil-nil draw with Uruguay sent all but Bolivia through to the last eight from Group A.

Bolivia's last shot at a quarter-final berth, and they began in the right earnest, knowing well that they had to win. Jaime Moreno with an opportunistic strike in the 24th minute, over goalkeeper Leao Butron who was off his line on this occasion.

However, Claudio Pizarro, who was snapped up by Chelsea from Bayern Munich just a few days ago on a Bosman Ruling, then showed just why the Blues are willing to pay him five million dollars a year. Peru's equaliser coming in the 33rd minute.

But Bolivia regained their lead just before the referee could blow for half-time. Jhasmany Campos with an emphatic finish as he punished the Peruvian defence for some slack marking. No one picking up his run, as Erwin Sanchez's side went into the breather 2-1 ahead.

Entertaining tournament

And they looked good to go through to the quarters from Group A, right until the 85th minute. But Pizarro broke the hearts of the thousands of Bolivian supporters at the Estadio Metropolitano de M rida.

The 2-2 draw meant Bolivia failed to record their first Copa America win since 1997, while Julio Cesar Uribe's side, with four points from three matches, celebrated their place in the quarters.

Meanwhile Uruguay and Venezuela knew a draw was enough to send both through, and they played out a goalless draw.

Both sides created few chances in what many felt was the worst game so far, of an otherwise entertaining tournament. The result ensured that three teams went through to the quarters from Group A.

Venezuela topping Group A with five points, followed by Peru and Uruguay on four apiece. Peru however takes second spot on goal difference, with Bolivia last on two points.
