London:
West Ham's Joe Cole made it into England's World Cup squad Thursday as coach Sven-Goran Eriksson went for a mix of youth and experience in his 23-man roster. Cole, a flashy 20-year-old midfielder, was a mild surprise, as was another West Ham player, goalkeeper David James.
James, sometimes derided as 'Calamity James' for his blunders, was selected ahead of Arsenal backup Richard Wright. Veteran Arsenal defender Martin Keown made the cut.
Among those who failed to make the squad were Real Madrid's Steve McManaman and Arsenal's Ray Parlour. The fringe players who made the list included Manchester United defender Wes Brown and Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves.
Blackburn striker Matt Jansen, widely reported to be considered for his first cap, did not make the squad.
There were no major shocks in Eriksson's selections, which included usual starters such as David Beckham, Michael Owen and David Seaman.
