Ballon d'Or celebrates heroic footballers each year. The award is in recognition for sublime efforts on the field - traditionally given to forwards who have scripted memorable wins. What if, however, there were awards 'honouring' dives and falls - some of them being the difference between memorable wins and nightmarish defeats? Now, there is!
As the world of football waits with bated breath for the 2014 Ballon d'Or awards - scheduled for January 12, many fans are also voting hard for the Fallon d'Floor - a tougne-in-cheek take on the most epic dives in the last year.
Six dives have been shortlisted, including Arjen Robben's theatrical fall during World Cup and Luis Suarez's fall after gnawing on his Italian opponent. In its inaugural edition, Fallon d'Floor invites voting on its website and urges more importance to the dives that had an impact on the final scoreline. "Not all dives are created equal. Vote for the most theatrical nomination, weighing more importance if the dive decided the outcome of an important game," reads the message on fallondfloor.com.
Over 100,000 votes have already been registered. Those who are uncertain also have the option of watching replays of the nominations.
While it may be a humorous take on an act which is looked down upon in football, the 'winner' would be advised to take it with a pinch of salt - or a blade of grass - going forward.
