FIFA World Cup: England Players Paying the Price, Literally

England players are hurting after two successive defeats in the FIFA World Cup. According to reports in the British media, the pain is not just emotional but financial as well.

According to a report in UK's Mirror, several hi-profile members of the England team - currently in Brazil for the World Cup - have hired security guards to secure their properties in their absence. Their concern is not unwarranted as in the past, several international stars have reported robberies when playing abroad. "All them are concerned about security," a source was quoted as saying. "But they have met with their individual clubs and their own security to make sure that all alarm systems are up-to-date and serviced." (Also read: British press slams 'sloppy' England footballers)

The safety of family is also an important - if not primary - concern for the players. ""The last thing you want to be worrying about is your property and loved ones while you are away." England coach Roy Hodgson had barred wives and girlfriends from accompanying their partners to Brazil. The concern though is not only in the English camp. Several international stars who play in the English Premier League have also called for additional security. "Football clubs are becoming a lot more active now with the security provision they put in place. It is a major concern to look after their players, so that they can focus on playing football," Professional Footballers' Association assistantt chief executive John Bramhall was quoted as saying by the report.

A possible early exit from World Cup after defeats against Italy and Uruguay may shame the players in the English team. It however may come as a relief to stars looking to calm their off-field nerves.
