Hungary, World Cup runners-up in 1954, last featured in the 1972 Euro when the final stages were a four-team affair. They last played in the World Cup 30 years ago. Their last major tournament was the 1986 World Cup and they will start as underdogs against Austria, a team that is on a nine-game competitive winning streak.
In head-to-head in Euros, Hungary have won 10 times in 15 matches against Austria, who have won once. Four matches have been draws. Hungary have scored more goals (27) against Austria's 8.
Austria could turn out to be the dark horse at Euro 2016. They have an early chance to underline their credentials when they begin their Group F campaign against old rivals and neighbours Hungary at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux on Tuesday.
The game in Bordeaux will be the 138th meeting between the two nations but it will be their first encounter in a decade and their first competitive game in more than 30 years. This is Austria's first major tournament since the 1998.
Their only previous clash at a major tournament came in the quarter-finals of the 1934 World Cup in Italy when Austria won 2-1.
Coach Marcel Koller's men are the favourites to come out on top again this time.
