Genoa defender Luca Antonelli has been ruled out of the Italy squad for a World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic due to injury, the Azzurri said on Monday.
Italy coach Cesare Prandelli is set to trim his current 30-man squad down to 23 for Friday's match in Prague, as well as the upcoming Confederations Cup in Brazil.
As well as Antonelli, the Azzurri could also be without experienced defender Andrea Barzagli, who is suffering from tendinitis in his foot.
Antonelli had to leave the pitch early with a leg injury following a clash in the 4-0 friendly defeat of San Marino in Bologona last Friday and could now miss selection for the Confederations Cup.
A scan on Monday revealed "heavy bruising with bleeding", meaning the Genoa player "will need 10 to 15 days recovery time", according to the Italian football federation (FIGC).
At the halfway stage of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Italy top Group B on 13 points, with Bulgaria, who have played one more game, on 10 and the Czech Republic on eight.
