Literal meaning of Poznan is "one who is recognised" and it is time for the UEFA Euro 2012 hosts to be recognised. A city, which caters to varied sport interests ranging from handball to rowing to gridiron, has football on its menu this June. The home ground of Polish teams Lech Woznan and Warta Poznan has a UEFA designated capacity of 40,000 spectators.
Originally built between 1968-1980, the stadium was renovated in the years 2003-2010. The fifth largest stadium in Poland will have 3 matches of Group C at the Euro 2012 with Ireland, Croatia and Italy being the teams involved.
There has been a decent crop of international players originating from the city. Aniola (Angel) earned his nickname "The Devil" for terrorising back lines during the 1950s and his 196 league appearances for Lech brought 138 goals; 137 more than what left-back Hieronim Barczak accumulated in his 367 games two decades later.
The Municipal Stadium, scene of Spain's 2006 UEFA European Under-19 Championship triumph, hosted its first senior international on 17 November 2010 as Robert Lewandowski's brace helped Poland beat Ivory Coast 3-1. This is the sixth stadium Lech have called home in their 90-year history, since starting out on an unremarkable pitch near Grzybowa Street in the south of the city.
