Since his debut in 1998, Andrew Flintoff developed into one of the leading all-rounders of his time. While his numbers with bat and ball are not exactly earth shattering, they don't do justice to his contribution in England's cricketing history. The stats don't show how his presence had an uplifting effect on his team-mates and crowds. When Flintoff was at his best, there was simply no stopping him - be it with bat or ball.
Flintoff's moment of glory for England came in the 2005 Ashes series at home. Having lost the Lord's Test, it seemed Australia would beat England easily but what followed was a tremendous fightback by the hosts. It was Flintoff who led the way, shining for England in all the disciplines
He scored 402 runs and took 24 wickets in the five Tests, playing a pivotal role for England. He provided quick runs and picked up crucial wickets. To add to that, he was energetic in the field and helped in strategic planning that turned the course of games.
However, things took a turn for the worst when Flintoff had to undergo knee surgery. It affected his game very badly.
"Post 2005 was a difficult period for me. Couldn't get into rhythm with the bat for 2 to 3 months. Played every game as if it was my last," said Flintoff in a candid conversation with ICC-cricket.com. Â
The curtain finally came down on Flintoff's career when he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2010. But rather than walking into the sunset, the man decided to try different ventures. The more recent one being getting into the boxing ring in 2012.
Another injury struck though and he needed shoulder surgery after his bout with American Richard Dawson in December 2012 and was skeptical if he would ever step into the ring again.
"It was just one of those things and after that I needed surgery on my shoulder. But I don't think I would do it again."
It is the game that gave him so much though that keeps Flintoff hooked. The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy started in 2008 and has been keeping the burly former England all-rounder on his toes.
Flintoff's mindset of enjoying the game has seen the academy gain in popularity since its inception. It reflects Andrew Flintoff's own ideology in playing the game. He feels that the best way to bring interest in cricket among the kids is to bring out the fun along with the skills needed.
"My philosophy has always been to enjoy cricket and have no fear of failure. Kids play cricket because they are enthusiastic about it," the former all-rounder emphasised.
The rise in popularity of the academy has seen over 4000 kids attend the 40 camps all over the country during summer. While Flintoff cannot always make an appearance, when he does they are indeed starstruck.
As one youngster puts it, "It's very cool to be able to see him face to face."
Not just the children, even the coaches are fans of the all-rounder and for them. The highlight of the summer is when Flintoff takes time out from his busy schedule to visit the academy.
Having represented England in 79 Tests, 141 ODIs and 7 T20Is from 1998 to 2009, Flintoff has no regrets about his playing days and is satisfied at what the game has given him.
"I enjoyed my cricketing days, there have been good days and bad days. I was lucky to play for England and won trophies for Lancashire so am happy."
