West Indies appoint Gibson as new coach

St. John's:

Within hours of quitting as England bowling coach, Ottis Gibson took charge of West Indies on Tuesday.

The West Indies was back in Australia this week to play five one-day internationals and two Twenty20s until Feb. 23 under David Williams, the longtime assistant who took over when John Dyson was sacked in August.

When the squad returns home, Williams will assist Gibson against visiting Zimbabwe from Feb. 28 in a Twenty20 and five one-dayers.

Unlike past coaches, Gibson was given responsibility for all of West Indies' representative teams by the national cricket board.

"We are at a stage in the development of West Indies cricket where we believe we have the players who are capable of taking the game to the next level," the WICB said in a statement.

"Ottis has the experience and knowledge to work with players at all levels, as he demonstrated with the England team. We are confident he can help to chart the way forward for West Indies cricket."

Gibson had been the bowling coach for England for the last two years, and the England and Wales Cricket Board granted his request to be released from his contract.

Gibson, who turns 41 in March, was a fast-bowling allrounder for Barbados who played two tests and 15 ODIs for West Indies from 1995-99.

"I am really excited about the new challenge and I am very happy to be involved in West Indies cricket again," he said.

"West Indies cricket has always been my passion. I was excited as a player to represent the West Indies and I am honored to be appointed as the head coach. It is a privilege and I am really looking forward to working with the West Indies and everyone involved in West Indies cricket. I fully understand what cricket means to the people of the region and I hope in time we can make our cricket strong again."
