Karachi:
The governing board members had passed a resolution confirming Bari as the new COO in place of Altaf, PCB announced.
"Bari will start working as COO with immediate effect," the board said.
Promotion of Bari to this important and key position is likely to generate lot of controversy in Pakistan cricket as he has been the target of criticism since being appointed as PCB Director (Human Resources) last year by Chairman Ejaz Butt.
He also functioned as the interim chief selector for a while recently after Butt had sacked the national selection committee headed by another former cricketer Abdul Qadir.
Bari said he would relinquish his position as Director HR and concentrate fully on his new responsibilities.
"There is a lot of work to be done for Pakistan cricket and my priority would be to streamline affairs in the board and also play my part in making international teams return to Pakistan soon," Bari said.
Former Pakistan opening batsman Aamer Sohail had launched a scathing attack on Bari last week blaming him for the security lapse that led to a terrorist attack on Sri Lankan team in Lahore earlier this year.
Bari was at that time security coordinator for the PCB arrangements for the visiting teams.
Former chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed also termed the appointment of Bari as COO as a big disaster in waiting for Pakistan cricket.
"Appointing someone like Bari who has been a failure as chief selector and administrator to such a key position is tantamount to playing around with the future of Pakistan cricket," he said.
Bari, 61, who has played 81 Tests and 51 one-dayers, was also the chief selector during the last two World Cups.
Bari's appointment as COO was almost on the cards once Altaf was removed through a resolution by the governing board last week.
In the PCB constitutional set up the chairman has to seek approval from the governing board for appointing someone as COO. The board also has the authority to nominate a COO directly through a resolution.
