Virat Kohli's first day century against New Zealand during the 3rd Test in Indore will help relieve some of the pressure from the India Test captain, cricket great Sunil Gavaskar told NDTV on Saturday.
Lavishing praise on the 27-year-old batsman, Gavaskar said Kohli is an 'utterly self-confident' player, and that his century has come at a very important juncture, with the skipper having failed to notch up a significant total in the first two Tests.
"As a captain, you tend to focus more on the other players than what you are doing. Virat's century has come at a very important time, since he failed to get a big score in the last two matches," he said.
Gavaskar also predicted that Kohli would reach his record of 11 Test centuries as a captain by the end of the ongoing season.
Kohli was unbeaten at 103 at stumps on Day 1, with teammate Ajinkya Rahane also on the crease at 79, as India notched up an impressive 267/3. Gavaskar said Rahane has a good opportunity to complete his century on Day 2.
"Rahane is due a big hundred. He had missed out on getting one in the first two Tests, so hopefully he will be able to complete it tomorrow,"Â he stated.
With Indore drawing an enthusiastic crowd on Day 1, the former cricketer said that he was expecting a capacity crowd on Day 2.
"It's a Sunday (on Day 2), and Virat Kohli is still batting, so Indore should have a full house," Gavaskar said.
