Somachandra De Silva appointed new chairman of SLC

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's cricket advisor and former player, D Somachandra De Silva was appointed as the new chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's cricket advisor and former player, D Somachandra De Silva was on Thursday appointed as the new chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The appointment came nearly three months after former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga was sacked from the post following differences with the Sports Minister, Gamini Lokuge.

Duleep Mendis will continue to work as chief executive of SLC, the governing body of the game in the country.

De Silva represented Sri Lanka as as all-rounder and was also the captain of the national side during 1982-83. He was also a former national selector.

Nishantha Ranatunga, brother of Arjuna, was appointed as the secretary of the SLC, a statement of the cricket board read here.

Nishantha was a former presidential media advisor in 2003-05, besides being the director-general of the state-owned Sinhala TV channel Rupavahini.

While Sujeewa Rajapakse was appointed the treasurer of SLC, Lalith Wickremasinghe, Promodaya Wickramasinghe, Ranil Abeynaike and A Gunaratne Weerasinghe were made members of the interim committee.
