New Delhi:

One man stalled India's charge for a first series win in Australia in 2003-2004. That man was, of course, Ricky Ponting.

Punter, as he is also known in cricketing circles for his fondness for betting, is currently the number one ODI and Test batsman in the World in the ICC Rankings.

His individual performance last time around went a long way in maintaining Australia's ten year unbeaten home record.

But for India, it is a double whammy situation. Not only is punter a great captain, his prolific form not just in recent times, but especially against India means, they have to make a plan on how to get him early.

Ricky Ponting would prepare for the Test Series against India in style with his 26th one day hundred against New Zealand - his second hundred of the Chappell-Hadlee series having scored 107 in the first one-dayer in Adelaide.

But come 26th December and Punters attention will be turned towards the Test arena. The Melbourne game will only be his 4th test of the year, but for India his form is truly a big worry.

Punter is just 500 runs away from joining the 10,000 run club and his 33 Test 100's are the most by an Australian batsman.

But, it is his record against India down under that will send a chill down any spine with an average of over 100 in just seven Tests

That bradmanesque average against India was courtesy the two double hundreds he scored in the 2003-2004 series. This one in Adelaide came in a losing cause but the second one helped Australia level the series in Melbourne.

Of course, it is not only Ponting's batting that could cause India problems. His exceptional fielding abilities means Australia has one of the safest hands in world cricket.

No wonder, during ICC awards Ponting is the top ranked player in the world in the test and one day rankings. He is also been the ICC overall player of the year for the last two seasons.

With that kind of a record, India will have to make sure they have a very good plan in place to get him early.

Otherwise, Ponting will make sure that Australia go on to break their own record of 16 Test wins in a row.
