Sydney:

Fast bowler Brett Lee is set to rejoin the Australian cricket team and could play the last two limited-overs matches in a series against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi.

Lee, who has not played for Australia since December, was expected to fly to the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday to reinforce a squad that has a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

He was originally selected for the tour but was ruled out after team medical staff decided he had not recovered from ankle surgery.

The 32-year-old paceman remained in South Africa to practice with his Indian Premier League team, Kings XI Punjab, and will now have another assesment from Australian team doctor Trefor James.

"Brett Lee has progressed well in his recovery," James told Australian media. "He will join the Australian squad in Abu Dhabi, where he will continue to train and be further assessed.

"Should his progress be far enough advanced he may be considered for selection in the remaining matches of the one-day series and the Twenty20 match in Dubai."

Lee could use the one-day matches on Friday and Sunday as a springboard for selection for the Ashes tour of England, which follows the Twenty20 World Cup in June. He has said he wants to play in both.

Lee has taken 310 wickets in 76 Test matches and 303 wickets in 173 ODIs, leading the attack in the period immediately after Glenn McGrath - who took more test wickets than any other fast bowler - retired from international cricket following Australia's 2007 World Cup win.
