Bangladesh coach Stuart Law had told his team on Monday that celebrations can wait till India have been knocked out of Asia Cup. His team will now have enough reasons to party however as the hosts in Mirpur defeated Sri Lanka by 5-wickets to get a shot at the title on Tuesday.
In spite of featuring in the event on nine separate occasions, Bangladesh have not fared better than finishing third. Even this was way back on 1986. Fast forward to 2012 and the story has changed dramatically. Faced with the challenge of defeating the giants of the sub-continent, Mushfiqur Rahim's team began positively.
Pakistan won the opening match but barely. A 21-run defeat was much closer than shown by the result sheet as Bangladesh scored 241 against Pakistan's 262.
The start was a sign of bigger things to come. Bangladesh turned bigger things into spectacular ones, downing World Champions India by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare.
Before Tuesday's match, Law had instructed his side that win against India 'was just not enough.' Sri Lankan batsmen were challenged and beaten by Bangladesh bowlers and the batsmen returned to seal a confident win, a win best summarised by Shakib-al-Hasan in the post match ceremony. "We have played like a team and have been consistent in the series so far. But with one more match to go, nothing is impossible."
