Bangalore:
An auction event for charity in Bangalore saw Ponting getting rather more than he bargained for.
Ricky Ponting was well aware that Indians are passionate about cricket, but he was certainly taken aback when one cricket fan got rather carried away.
A man who paid good money at the charity event thought he deserved more from the Aussie cricketer than just a formal handshake.
"He is a great captain - and our Indian culture is to kiss him. In foreign you know, they hug and kiss, but he refuses to hug our Indians. I told him - you hug me - otherwise you get lost," said Jairam Reddy, fan of Ricky Ponting.
Ponting did not look too comfortable with what happened and tried to keep his distance even as Mandira Bedi had to step in to try and cool things down.
Things got awkward when the same ardent fan offered the winning bid for Ponting's bat - and came onto the stage again.
Once kissed, twice shy - and this time Ponting kept both a bat's distance and Mandira between them.
More persuasion from Mandira and Ponting escaped one more demonstration of affection. But the negotiation took quite a while and was clearly an awkward moment for all concerned.
After this, Ponting will certainly think that aggression from Sreesanth is a whole lot easier to deal with than the love of a cricket fan.
