Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc was hospitalised on Thursday after sustaining an injury on his leg during a practice session in Sydney.
The paceman, who was Player of the Series of the 2015 World Cup in Australia, sustained a cut while fielding in a training drill at the Hurstville Oval in the south of the metropolis when he dived to field a ball.
The 26-year-old jumped and landed awkwardly on training equipment on his left knee and required immediate medical attention. He was later taken to St. George Hospital.
Medical staff, who deemed the injury as serious, called for an ambulance for one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. He was operated upon and received 30 stitches on his left shin.
Cricket Australia Chief Medical Officer John Orchard said,"Mitchell will remain in hospital for the next few days to minimise movement to his leg and will use an extension brace for the next 2-3 weeks until his stitches are removed.
"At this stage, barring any complications, we are hopeful he is on track to play at the start of the Australian summer."
Starc and other Australian cricketers are in Sydney for a series of fitness tests and pre-season briefings. Starc and fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood had been given a month off from competitive cricket following the Sri Lanka tour before the home summer.
Starc, who was born in Sydney, was the star performer for Australia when they defeated Sri Lanka ODIs and T20Is series won by Australia. Recently, Starc also set a new world record to become the fastest to reach 100 ODI wickets, reaching the milestone in his 52nd game.
The 18-year-old record was previously held by former Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq.
Australia will play three-Test series against South Africa and Pakistan, home and away ODI competitions against New Zealand and a five-match ODI series against Pakistan and three T20s against Sri Lanka before Australia returns to Asia for a four-Test tour of India.
The left-arm pacer has already been ruled out of Australia's five-match One-day International tour to South Africa. After the limited over series, South Africa will in return tour Down Under for three Test matches.
