Right then! That ends a promisingly interesting encounter turning into a boring one-sided one. Pakistan looked like they might create an upset tonight but could not go the distance. They now take on Australia in a definite do-or-die game at this very same venue on Friday, 25th March, 2016. The Kiwis, on the other hand, head to Kolkata to take on Bangladesh in their final league game on Saturday, March 26, 2016.
Pakistan captain SHAHID AFRIDI congratulates Williamson and New Zealand on the win. Also says that his side played well to restrict them to 180. When asked about NZ spinners, he says that they couldn't capitalize in the middle overs and thus lost the game. Also feels that it was a chaseable total. Admits that they failed to build any partnership after the first 6 overs. Feels that they could have gone for 8-9 runs an over instead of going for too many big hits. On being asked as to how can Pakistan start winning, Afridi hits the nail on the head by saying that lesser mistakes have to be committed. Sadly says that the next game could be his last for Pakistan and wants his side to do well against Australia.
Victorious New Zealand skipper KANE WILLIAMSON says that it is nice to be on a really good surface. Praises Guptill for his beautiful knock and feels that the entire batting unit played nicely. Also has a word for his bowlers for pulling things back after a tough start. About the total, he says that it was a par score and knew that initial 6 overs will be key for them. When asked about their spinners, states that they are adapting to the conditions and bowling their heart out as per the pitches. Adds that his team was expecting Pakistan to come out hard in the first 6 overs. On being asked about their spin success, Williamson feels his spinners have been very consistent and have adjusted well to the different surfaces. On being asked as to what makes this team so special, Williamson feels that his side is playing some smart cricket by adjusting to the different surfaces.
MARTIN GUPTILL has been named the Man Of The Match. Says that he was sitting outside for a precautionary measure as he had a bad hamstring when inquired about his absence on the field. Agrees that there are targets after specific overs and the Kiwis achieved that tonight. Mentions that they got to play their shots well and more aggressively in the first 6 overs. On improvising, Guptill says that one has to keep playing the same way as one cannot keep on changing every time. About the momentum, he says that they want to follow the flow as they come to bat. Excellent bowling display by the Kiwis. They were carted all over the place in the first 6 overs but came back superbly. Once again, the spinners were impressive as Santner and Sodhi went for just 54 in 8 overs combined with 3 wickets. Not sure when was the last time anyone punted on New Zealand stifling the opposition with spin bowling? Tremendous.
Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal made some heads turn with a couple of lusty blows but the entertainment was short-lived. The boundaries seemed to dry up after the Powerplay. Actually, Shehzad's sluggish innings was the main reason for Pakistan's dismal show as the strike was not rotated enough.
The first 6 overs witnessed some absolutely brutal carnage as Pakistan raced to their highest Powerplay score in WT20s. The Kiwi bowlers looked all lost as Williamson searched for answers. And he got one, as Milne got rid of Sharjeel. Once that happened, it was all downhill for the Asian side.
A comfortable win for New Zealand in the end. With that, they become the first team to qualify for the semi finals of the WT20 2016. They got a scare when Sharjeel was going bonkers in the Powerplay but once he was gone, Pakistan just faded away.
