Lions hunt down Tigers in ICL tie

Tejinder Pal Singh scored a delectable 74 to power Chandigarh Lions over Royal Bengal Tigers by eight wickets in the Indian Cricket League at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a moderate 141, Tejinder, who was later adjudged Man of the Match, hammered the Royal Bengal Tigers bowlers mercilessly and left them completely clueless in the middle.

During the innings which took just 48 balls, Tejinder struck eight boundaries and sent the opponent bowlers out of the ground twice for the maximum.

Earlier, invited to bat first, Kolkatas Royal Bengal Tigers posted a moderate target of 141. Despite a attacking 57 by opener Hamish Marshall, Tigers failed to cross 150-run mark as the Chandigarh bowlers drafted a late comeback during the innings.

Tigers suffered an early blow when a quick delivery off Daryl Tuffey kissed opener Deep Dasgupta's willow before wicketkeeper Sarabjeet Singh pouched an easy catch.

But the Chandigarh bowlers failed to arrest the flow of Tigers' New Zealander import Hamish Marshall, who took 20 runs from the fourth over off Tuffey and sent him out of the ground on four occasions, including once for maximum.

Chandigarh Lions, who were led by Andrew Hall after ICL Executive Board suspended skipper Chris Cairns yesterday, were seemingly ruffled at one point of time when Marshall was wielding his willow, sending bowlers out of the ground at will.

Marshall completed his half-century in 28 deliveries, en route 57 off 35 balls, hitting a huge sixer off Chandigarh spinner Karanveer Singh. He paired up with Rajiv Kumar (14) to add 50 runs in 27 balls in second-wicket partnership and adorned his innings with eight boundaries and two sixers, before being dismissed by Tuffey.

Royal Bengal Tigers were 85 for 2 after 10 overs.

Chandigarh made a comeback on 13th over as left-arm spinner Tejinder Pal Singh dismissed Rohan Gavaskar (17) and skipper Craig Mc Millan (1) cheaply on two successive deliveries.

Chandigarh bowlers put a break on Tigers' run rate as the Kolkata outfit lost another wicket on 15th over when Love Ablish's delivery found Andre Adams' (9) leg in front of the wickets. Tigers' run rate never soared again as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Lance Klusener's unbeaten 18 off 18 balls helped Tigers finish 140 for nine as he and Eklak Ahmid scored 10 runs in the last over of the innings by Ablish.

For Chandigarh Lions, Tejinder Singh took two wickets for 11 runs, while Hall bagged same number of wickets for 19 runs. Tuffey and Ablish took two wickets each, while left arm spinner Bipul Sharma took one wicket.

Chasing the target, both Chandigarh openers Sarabjeet Singh and Tejinder Pal Singh started on an attacking note as they gathered 44 runs from the first five overs. Sarabjeet started hammering the Tigers' bowlers right from the third over, during which he scored 12 runs off Klusener.

The 53-run partnership off 43 balls failed to flourish any more when left-arm pacer Eklak Ahmid sent Sarabjeet packing on 19.

Chandigarhs team were 77 for 1 after 10 overs and completed 100 runs in 13 overs.

Tejinder, who drove his side to the third victory in the ICL's second season, joined hand with Manish Sharma (25 off 20 balls) to produce 39-run second-wicket partnership off 32 balls. The batsmen showed consummate ease in rotating strikes before Sri Lankan spinner Upul Chandana snared out Manish as Eklak pouched a well-judged catch.

But Tigers failed to put Chandigarhs team in trouble as Lou Vincent joined Tejinder to carry the flag and wrapped up the match with a boundary off Klusener, leaving 15 balls to spare.

For Tigers, Eklak Ahmed and Upul Chandana bagged one wicket each.
