No sponsors, no cricket. Such is the state of affairs in Sri Lanka that the women cricketers in the country south of one which has the world's richest cricketing body, have no sponsors to fund the sport and them and are lining up to join the military as a means of livelihood instead.
The BBC has reported that most of the players of the national side have already signed up for jobs in the armed services after a cash-stripped Board failed to find any sponsors.
Though the cricketers are not expected to take part in actual combat and can continue to play for teams of the defense forces. The British news agency also quoted skipper Shashikala Siriwardene as saying that she hopes all the national level players can get a job and that she herself expects to get a confirmation on her application filed to join the navy.
90% of all national players have reportedly already found jobs after a hunt for sponsors failed and the Board decided to have sponsors on a per-tournament basis.
