Knowing the men of BCCI

Mumbai:

Dilip Vengsarkar naming board officials said they interefreed with the selection process. So who are these suited men who decide the fate of the Indian cricket team and run BCCI?

Board of cricket control in India is known to be one of the richest cricket boards in the world and inherent with controversies.

Niranjan Shah honorary secretary of the board is also the leader in controversies and the closest man to BCCI President Sharad Pawar.

A millionaire from Rajkot, with dealership stakes in Mont Blac and Canali his highest stake is perhaps his son, the Saurashtra Captain and an aspirant to the national team.

It is under Shah's reign that BCCI's controversial era began, starting with the appointment of Greg Chappel as the coach.

Even now in the ongoing BCCI vs selectors war, Shah is Vengsarkar's top adversary. Shah reportedly wanted to lay down the rules for selectors and even wanted his son to be included in the A team, but Vengsarkar didn't agree.

Lalit Modi the vice president of the board is a 42-year-old billionaire and owner of Modi Entertainment Network.

When BCCI needs money Modi is the man it turns to. The man under whom the board's TV and new media rights today bring in a staggering US$ 2 billion.

Modi's latest introduction is now the IPL, the reason BCCI could prevent players from moving to ICL.

Shashank Manohar is the president-elect of the board and no BCCI deal is signed and sealed unless this legal member sees the fine print.

A lawyer from Nagpur he is the one who advocated the policy to pay players according to performance.

Another member Rajiv Shukla the vice president is the face of the board to the media.

Shukla is one of the best networked journalists in the capital with access to 10 Janpath as well as the BJP headquarters.

A former talk show host, a TV channel owner, he also has a day job as a Rajya Sabha member from UP. His pastimes include jetsetting with friends like Shah Rukh Khan.

Prof Ratnakar Shetty chief administrative Officer of BCCI is this quiet professor of Wilson College and a key functionary at the Mumbai end of affairs.

Known to share a great rapport with players and officials alike, he is also most non-controversial of the lot.

They are not the complete team under Pawar but they are the power centre of the Board. Most of them also control powerful state bodies.

They don't need the BCCI as much as the BCCI needs them even if two gentlemen Greg Chappel and Dilip Vengsarkar disagree.
