The covers are being peeled off again. Play is expected to resume at 5:35 PM IST, with the aim of completing 70 overs for the day. Indian players continue to play football near the boundary.

The players are finally going off, and the covers have been placed on the pitch and surrounding areas. Some Indian players are having a light football session near the boundary, while others are chatting with the officials. We hear more covers are about to come in.

Play has been stopped two balls into Sri Lanka's innings after a light drizzle, but the Indian players haven't walked out after the umpire's instruction. It seems like the rain has stopped. A bit of confusion out there in the middle. Dark clouds overhead!

There comes the declaration! Prasidh Krishna drives the full toss into the gap and India declare on 503/9. Jurel walks back unbeaten on 115. Prasidh Krishna is also not out on 4. An ideal time to declare as dark clouds gather overhead.

Some more bad news coming from Colombo. According to ESPNcricinfo, more rain is coming in. The groundstaff has rolled the water off the covers. It's getting darker overhead.

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando have been fined 25 per cent of their match over their fiery altercation on the opening day of the 2nd Test in Colombo. 

Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”

In addition to this, one demerit point each has been added to the disciplinary records of Fernando and Jaiswal, both of whom did not have any previous offences in the preceding 24-month period.

The rain break has also forced an early tea break. In the second session, Dhruv Jurel and Mohammed Siraj remained unbeaten as India scored 475/8. Stay tuned with us as we will be right back.

Lahiru Udara, positioned well inside the boundary rope, reacts smartly and completes a sharp catch. Seventh wicket gone for India.

Day 2 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka finally begins. For India, Dhruv Jurel and Saransh Jain are resuming the proceedings from 300/5. On the other hand, Lahiru Kumara will be bowling the first over of the day for Sri Lanka. 

There's a big update on India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Despite suffering an injury on the previous evening, Rishabh Pant remains available to bat and never left the ground. Harsha Bhogle also mentioned on air that Pant was prepared to bat even during yesterday's play.

"The pitch, it's still a batting day, I would think. India in a very good position. And when I look at this, there's not much that I can report about. But of course, wear and tear will kick in. Now what's different in this pitch from the Galle pitch? Initially, comparing the first day's play, there's more bounce here on offer than in Galle. Now that's considerable, even if you say four centimeters. Now we look at where the bowlers bowled yesterday. They have used very different lengths. The effective length has been the good length," said Russell Arnold. 

As India have reached the 300-run mark, all eyes are on captain Shubman Gill that whether he decides to declare the innings. However, it is highly unlikely that India will stop batting now as they will be eager to take score at least across the 400-run mark with five wickets in hand. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal is highly likely to face a strong punishment from ICC for his spat with Asitha Fernando. If the incident is deemed a serious breach of the MCC Code of Conduct, the India opener could face disciplinary action. He could be banned for either five Tests, 10 ODIs or even receive a lifetime ban if found guilty of a Level 4 breach. Severe acts of violence, threats or abuse against players, match officials or spectators fall under Level 4 breaches.

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal nearly came to blows with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando on Day 1 of their second Test in Colombo. After being hit for three boundaries in the over, Fernando managed to dismiss Jaiswal on the final ball and appeared to give him a send-off. Jaiswal, who was walking back, turned around to confront Fernando. The two exchanged a few words, clashed heads and there was also a push, before they were separated by the rest of the Sri Lankan team.

The highlight of the day was Devdutt Padikkal’s quiet authority, with his technique and temperament adding immense depth and putting the long-standing debate around India’s number three spot comprehensively to rest. Though he endured a few nervous moments and survived a couple of dropped catches early in his innings, Padikkal swiftly locked in to become a deeply calming presence at the crease. The highlight of his mastery was his method against the spinners -- judging length exceptionally early and playing late off the back foot.
 

Devdutt Padikkal struck his second consecutive Test century as India reached 300 for 5 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. Captain Shubman Gill made 50, while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 45 and 43 respectively. Dhruv Jurel (7 batting) and Saransh Jain (4 batting) were at the crease at the end of the day's play.
