Hove:
Chawla, who shone with the bat and the ball in his side's 10-wicket victory over Worcestershire in their earlier match, returned with figures of five for 95 from 33 overs on the opening day of the four-day match on Tuesday.
His prized scalps included that of former Australia opener and Somerset captain Justin Langer (4). Somerset relied mainly on former England opener Marcus Trescothick's (109) century to end the day on 314 for nine.
It was Chawla who broke the dangerous-looking opening stand of 138 between Trescothick and AV Suppiah (49) by trapping the latter LBW before removing the one-down JC Hildreth (2) cheaply to bring his side back into the game. He then took three quick wickets to reduce Somerset from 202 for three to 235 for six.
Chawla, who was signed as a temporary replacement for Pakistan's Yasir Arafat, is playing in his last match of the county championship.
Against Worcestershire, Chawla had scored his maiden first class hundred (102 not out) in his debut match for Sussex and followed it up with a six for 152.
