b Mitchell Starc
0.1 OUT! BOWLED! Can you believe it? That's Ashes for you! Mitchell Starc you beauty! He draws first blood and roars. Starc seams in and bowls it full and on leg. Rory Burns shuffles across too far, tries to flick but misses and gets knocked round his legs. There might be hint of late swing as well. This is a dramatic start as it gets. A wicket of the first ball and Australia are delighted. The players are all over Mitchell Starc. Rory Burns has to take the long walk back and goes without troubling the scorers. England certainly didn't hope for this kind of start. An early blow to them. Welcome to the 'Gabba' says Starc. 0/1

Haseeb Hameed | 25 | 75 | 3 | 0 | 33.33 |
c Steven Smith b Pat Cummins
26.4 OUT! TAKEN! Another one bites the dust! Haseeb Hameed's long stay in the middle comes to an end. A length ball, angling outside off. Haseeb Hameed gets on the front foot to defend but it takes the outside edge and goes towards the second slip where Steven Smith takes a sharp catch on his left. Half of the England side back in the hut. 60/5
Dawid Malan | 6 | 9 | 1 | 0 | 66.66 |
c Alex Carey b Josh Hazlewood
3.2 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Alex Carey takes his first catch on his debut and England lose their second wicket. Josh Hazlewood serves a good-length ball, around off, with a hint of away movement. Enough to kiss the outside edge of Dawid Malan's bat as he has a poke at it. Alex Carey makes no mistake behind the stumps as it was a regulation catch. Dawid Malan has to walk back to the pavilion and Australia are all pumped as they have got two wickets very early into this game. 11/2
Joe Root C | 9 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c David Warner b Josh Hazlewood
5.5 OUT! TAKEN! Australia not letting England to settle in. What a start for the Aussies. A full ball, outside off, this one is coming with the angle. Joe Root lunges and looks to block it out but the ball takes the outside edge and it goes straight to the first slip where David Warner holds onto it. England in all sorts of trouble as their skipper goes on a duck. 11/3
Ben Stokes | 5 | 21 | 1 | 0 | 23.80 |
c Marnus Labuschagne b Pat Cummins
12.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Pat Cummins gets rid of the big fish. Hurls in and bowls a back-of-a-length ball, on middle, angling in. Ben Stokes gets all squared up and hops from his crease as he tries to defend. The ball kisses the outside edge and flies to the third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes a good low catch diving to his left. Ben Stokes is not happy with that and goes back shaking his head off. First wicket for Pat Cummins and Australia well on top! England in deep deep trouble now! 29/4
Ollie Pope | 35 | 79 | 2 | 0 | 44.30 |
c Josh Hazlewood b Cameron Green
43.1 OUT! CAUGHT! What a catch from Josh Hazlewood in the deep! Cameron Green bags his maiden Test wicket and enters the wickets column as well. Green bowls a back-of-a-length delivery, on middle. The ball gets a little too big for Ollie Pope as he tries to pull. He is slightly late on his shot and the ball goes off the top edge towards deep backward square leg. Josh Hazlewood has to cover quite a ground as he runs from fine leg and runs to his left. He keeps his eyes on the ball, makes a full-stretch dive and manages to grab the ball. A stunner from him. Cameron Green is elated and so is Australia! They have been all over England. 118/7
Jos Buttler Wk | 39 | 58 | 5 | 0 | 67.24 |
c Alex Carey b Mitchell Starc
40.3 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Second catch for Alex Carey on his debut and he commits no mistake. Just when the partnership was starting to blossom for England, Jos Buttler holes out. Mitchell Starc provides his team with a breakthrough. Serves a good-length ball, on off, nipping away. Jos Buttler has a nibble at it from his crease. The ball goes off the outside edge and goes to Alex Carey who gobbles it up cleanly. Huge wicket as Jos Buttler was looking dangerous. 112/6
Chris Woakes | 21 | 24 | 4 | 0 | 87.50 |
c Josh Hazlewood b Pat Cummins
50.1 OUT! TAKEN! The captain takes a five-fer. A short ball, on middle. Chris Woakes pulls it but does not middle it. The ball goes off the top edge towards Josh Hazlewood in the deep again. He has to work hard as he runs across from fine leg and takes a diving catch. He plucks it just above the ground. Almost a carbon copy of the catch he took at backward square leg of Pope. Sensational stuff from Josh Hazlewood and England are all out for 147. THAT WILL ALSO BE TEA ON DAY 1! 147/10
Ollie Robinson | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
c Alex Carey b Pat Cummins
44.3 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Another catch for Alex Carey. He is having a day out and so is their new skipper as he bags his third. Pitches it on a good length, outside off, nipping away. Ollie Robinson is tempted to go for a drive. The ball goes off the outside edge and carries through to Alex Carey who snaffles it up. England in nothing but tatters now. 122/8
Mark Wood | 8 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 53.33 |
c Marcus Harris b Pat Cummins
48.3 OUT! TAKEN! Cummins goes wide of the crease and serves a short-of-a-length ball, on middle. Mark Wood hops and looks to work it on the leg side but without any control. He gets hit on the gloves and the ball lobs nicely for Marcus Harris who takes the easiest of catches at short leg. 144/9

55.2 OUT! CAUGHT! Would you believe it? Warner misses out on a century. Robinson hurls in and bowls a slower ball, on middle. The ball stops a bit on the surface. David Warner tries to push it towards covers but throws his hands too early. He chips it instead towards extra cover where Ben Stokes dives ahead to catch the ball. Devastation for David Warner as he walks back to the pavilion after an excellent knock. For the first time in seven occasions, David Warner failed to hit a century after being dismissed off a no ball in a Test innings. 195/4

Marcus Harris | 3 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 17.64 |
c Dawid Malan b Ollie Robinson
5.2 OUT! CAUGHT! England needed an early breakthrough and Ollie Robinson provides them with one. Hurls a good-length ball, outside off, nipping away. Marcus Harris has a feel for it. The ball kisses the outside edge and flies to the third slip. Dawid Malan moves to his left and takes a good low catch. Ollie Robinson roars as he draws first blood. Good start by them and Marcus Harris has to walk back to the pavilion for a timid score. 10/1
Marnus Labuschagne | 74 | 117 | 6 | 2 | 63.24 |
c Mark Wood b Jack Leach
47.2 OUT! TAKEN! A wicket out of nowhere and England get a much-needed breakthrough and it's Jack Leach who has provided that. Bowls it tad short, on off. Marnus Labuschagne hangs back, makes room for himself and cuts it straight to backward point. The ball perhaps got too big on him. Mark Wood there grabs the catch and Marnus Labuschagne walks off the pitch after a fine innings. Huge applause from the crowd as well. Can England build on this now? 166/2
Steven Smith | 12 | 19 | 2 | 0 | 63.15 |
c Jos Buttler b Mark Wood
53 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Mark Wood gets his man and the big-gun, Smith goes for a timid score. Back of a length, outside off. Smith has an unnecessary poke at it. He only manages an outside edge and Jos Buttler pouches it with ease. No need for Smith to chase that one as he was just settling in. Australia lose their third now. 189/3
Travis Head | 152 | 148 | 14 | 4 | 102.70 |
b Mark Wood
104.3 OUT! BOWLED! Finally, England get their man and end Australia's innings as well. Travis Head makes room for himself very early and exposes his stumps. Mark Wood fires a straight ball, on the stumps. Travis Head tries to carve it over covers but he backed way too far and the ball was out of his reach. It sends the stumps flying and Travis Head walks back to the pavilion on the back of an excellent knock. Australia finish with 425 and have a lead of 278 runs! 425/10
Cameron Green | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
b Ollie Robinson
55.3 OUT! TIMBER! Sensational stuff from Ollie Robinson and England are back in the contest. Serves a good-length ball, on off, coming back in. Cameron Green comes forward and just shoulders arms to that one. Probably didn't read the length well. The ball jags back in and shatters the stumps. That was not a good leave at all. England are all pumped up and Ollie Robinson is on a hat-trick now. Alex Carey is the new batsman in. 195/5
Alex Carey Wk | 12 | 32 | 1 | 0 | 37.50 |
c Ollie Pope b Chris Woakes
64.4 OUT! TAKEN! England finds another breakthrough and Carey's debut innings is cut short for a timid score. Short of a length, on middle. Alex Carey gets on his toes as he looks to wrists it to mid-wicket but finds Ollie Pope at short mid-wicket who shows good reflexes and grabs this one over his head. Australia lead by 89 runs and England hanging in there. 236/6
Pat Cummins C | 12 | 27 | 0 | 0 | 44.44 |
c Haseeb Hameed b Joe Root
76 OUT! TAKEN! Australia 7 down now. A full ball, down the leg side. Pat Cummins flicks it late with soft hands towards the leg slip where Haseeb Hameed is stationed and he takes a good low catch. Pat Cummins is disappointed with himself as he walks back. The England skipper gets the opponent skipper! End of a crucial 70-run stand. 306/7
Mitchell Starc | 35 | 64 | 5 | 0 | 54.68 |
c Rory Burns b Chris Woakes
96 OUT! CAUGHT! Finally, England get the breakthrough! Woakes hurls a length ball, on middle. Mitchell Starc flicks it towards deep square leg. Gets the height but not the distance. Rory Burns is stationed over there. He doesn't even have to move an inch. Keeps his eyes on the ball and takes it with ease. Mitchell Starc departs but Australia will feel he has done his job. Chris Woakes breaks the 85-run stand and now England will look to wrap things up. 391/8
Nathan Lyon | 15 | 24 | 2 | 0 | 62.50 |
c Ollie Robinson b Mark Wood
102.3 OUT! TAKEN! Wood finally gets his man. Short ball, on middle. Lyon looks to pull but gets a leading edge high in the air and towards short square leg. Ollie Robinson charges in and takes a simple catch. 420/9

21 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Bowling down the leg side has finally worked for Starc. A relief for Starc after been thrown for runs. This was on a length and down the leg side. Hameed tries to tickle it down the ground but manages only gloves on it. The keeper, Alex Carey pouches and celebrates straightaway as Hameed takes a long walk to the pavilion. 61/2
Rory Burns | 13 | 27 | 2 | 0 | 48.14 |
c Alex Carey b Pat Cummins
9 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! First over after Lunch and Australia get the breakthrough and it is none other than the skipper who provides it. Bowls it on a good length, outside off. The ball shoots up after hitting the deck. Steep bounce and Rory Burns didn't expect that at all. He tries to cut it away but catches the gloves and carries it through to the keeper. Alex Carey makes no mistake behind the stumps and Rory Burns walks back to the pavilion. A wicket maiden from Pat Cummins! 23/1
Dawid Malan | 82 | 195 | 10 | 0 | 42.05 |
c Marnus Labuschagne b Nathan Lyon
73.4 OUT! CAUGHT! Finally! Finally! Nathan Lyon has scaled the mountain of 400 wickets in Test cricket, it has been an arduous climb, to be honest, as Lyon had to spend extra time in preying that elusive one wicket. He is only behind two greats, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, in the list of the leading wicket-takers for Australia in Test cricket. From being a pitch curator at the Adelaide Oval to becoming only the 7th spinner in Test cricket history to do so after the famous six - Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Rangana Herath, Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin, it's been one heck of a ride. Now coming to the delivery, it's nicely flighted and around off, Dawid Malan takes a step down the track and tries to flick but gets an inside edge onto the pads. It lobs up and Marnus Labuschagne reacts quickly from silly point to catch the ball. They all appeal and the finger has gone up. Something similar happened on the second ball of this over as well but then Dawid escaped. Not this time. Early exit for him this morning and it's a perfect start for Australia. 326 days between 399 and 400 wickets. That was a long wait. Lyon takes the ball and shows it to the audience to celebrate his milestone. Take a bow, GOAT! 223/3

Joe Root C | 89 | 165 | 10 | 0 | 53.93 |
c Alex Carey b Cameron Green
76.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Huge blow to England as both the overnight batters are back in the hut very early with the second new ball due soon! It is Cameron Green who gets the big fish and Joe Root is denied his maiden hundred on Australian soil. This was a good-length delivery, around the fifth stump. It's an outswinger. Root has a tentative poke at it and it takes the outside edge towards Alex Carey behind the sticks who takes a simple catch. The Aussies are pumped and England are in a spot of bother now! They trail by 49 runs. 229/4
Ben Stokes | 14 | 49 | 3 | 0 | 28.57 |
c Cameron Green b Pat Cummins
88.4 OUT! That's a snorter and Pat Cummins has taken out Ben Stokes. The sixth wicket goes down for England and they still trail by 12 runs. Once again the extra bounce that Cummins generates has done the trick. He is a beast with the new ball. Lands it around leg and gets it to jump a tad extra off the deck. Stokes is squared up slightly in his stance as he tries to work it on the leg side but closes the face of his bat early. The ball lobs off the leading edge and Cameron Green grabs the catch safely at gully. The replays show that it took the shoulder of his bat. The Aussies are ecstatic, England's talisman is gone. 266/6
Ollie Pope | 4 | 6 | 1 | 0 | 66.66 |
c Steven Smith b Nathan Lyon
77.3 OUT! CAUGHT! What is happening here? England lose another and they have lost their third wicket in the space of just 14 runs this morning! With the monkey off his back, Nathan Lyon is bowling with a nice rhythm. Gives this one some extra toss and lands it close to off, it has got good revs and there is an excellent grip for him as the ball lands and turns in with some extra bounce. Pope stays back and looks to cut but the bounce gets big on his bat and it takes the shoulder of his blade before hurrying to Steven Smith at first slip. He takes a sharp catch by stretching to his right and Australia are smelling blood. 234/5
Jos Buttler Wk | 23 | 39 | 4 | 0 | 58.97 |
c Alex Carey b Josh Hazlewood
91.1 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Oh, dear! Nothing has gone England's way this morning and Australia are bossing this game! Hazlewood serves a good-length ball, outside off, shaping away a hint off the seam. Buttler has a needless poke at it away from his body and it takes the outside edge towards Alex Carey behind the sticks who takes a simple catch, his 7th in this Test match so far. England lose their seventh wicket and they still trail by 10 runs. 268/7
Chris Woakes | 16 | 47 | 2 | 0 | 34.04 |
c Alex Carey b Cameron Green
103 OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Superb delivery, Green follows the batsman with a well-directed short ball at 138.3 kph, Woakes leans back and attempts to play the upper-cut but only manages to edge it to Alex Carey. He claims his 8th catch of this Test match. What a debut for him! He equals Brian Taber and Chris Read who also had eight wicket-keeping dismissals on Test debut. England are bundled out for 297 with a lead of only 19 runs. 297/10
Ollie Robinson | 8 | 17 | 0 | 0 | 47.05 |
c Travis Head b Nathan Lyon
97.5 OUT! CAUGHT! Ollie Robinson tries to get creative but he perishes in doing so! Lyon cleverly tosses this one up, outside off. Robinson looks to play the reverse sweep but does not nail it and hits it straight to Travis Head at backward point who takes a good sharp catch. England lose another and they lead by just 8 runs in the second innings. 286/8
Mark Wood | 6 | 13 | 1 | 0 | 46.15 |
b Nathan Lyon
101.4 OUT! TIMBER! A classic off spinner to dismiss Mark Wood. A generously tossed up delivery around off, plenty of drift on this one as it lands full and around off, Wood is lured into the drive but it beats the outside half of his bat and goes on to tickle the off pole. Lyon has a 4-fer now and England one wicket away from getting bundled out. They are ahead by just 18 runs. 296/9

Ollie Robinson keeps probing around off, on a length and nipping away a bit, Carey doesn't show much footwork as he looks to poke at it and gets a faint tickle towards Jos Buttler. He takes a simple catch. 16/1
