After a slow start alongside opening partner Kusal Perera, Thirimanne slowly but steadily shifted gears. Following Perera's wicket in the 8th over, Thirimanne was joined by senior pro Kumar Sangakkara. The duo rebuilt the Sri Lankan innings and put on a solid 161-run stand for the second wicket. Thirimanne seemed a lot more confident in the company of the veteran Sangakkara and managed to find gaps all around the park. His shots for singles were with as much purpose as his fours off poor deliveries. (Match report)

While Sangakkara executed his usual textbook strokes through covers and down the ground, Thirimanne was more aggressive in his approach - even managing a six over deep mid-wicket off Mohammed Hafeez.

Sangakkara eventually perished for 67, but Thirimanne continued and got his ton in the 34th over. He finally fell for 102 when Ajmal got through his defences in the 36th over.
