2014 Commonwealth Games Day 11 Highlights: India Finish with 64 Medals After Kashyap's Gold, Hockey Heartbreak
India finished fifth in the 2014 Commonwealth Games with 64 medals (15 gold, 30 silver, 19 bronze). England took the top spot with 174 medals of which 58 were gold.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games came to a close on Sunday night. India won three medals with Parupalli Kashyap clinching a historic gold in men's badminton singles. Jwala Gutta & Ashwini Ponnappa settled for silver in the badminton women's doubles while the men's hockey team also got a silver. Prakash Padukone had won the men's singles gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, which India retained through Syed Modi four years later.

The glorious uncertainties of sports notwithstanding, India will aim to finish on a golden high on the final day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The schedule could not have been kinder. India are in two badminton finals and with experience in plenty, the yellow metal is a fair ask.

No matter how many gold medals India win in wrestling or boxing, a multi-discipline event like an Olympics or Commonwealth Games is incomplete without a medal in hockey. Sardar Singh's India will run into Australia at 4:45 PM IST in what should be a cracker of a final. If India can strike gold, the horrible scars of the 2012 London Olympics will somewhat be healed.
India seem to be peaking at the right time. Without the talismanic Sardar, India got the better of New Zealand 3-2 in a semifinal match on Saturday. India were two goals down in 18 minutes but staged a remarkable recovery to score through Ramandeep, Rupinderpal and Akashdeep Singh to upset the higher ranked Kiwis.
India did well to defend their slender lead and with Sardar back in the mix, Terry Walsh's boy will have to deal with a rampant Australian side on Sunday evening. India have never won a Commonwealth Games gold and in Delhi four years ago, Australia blanked the home team eight goals without reply.
Australia and India were in the same pool. India lost the group match 4-2 and once again showed tremendous recovery in the second half of the match. Tough matches are physically draining but turn out to be morale boosters. Sardar Singh and his boys will be looking at history in Glasgow.

History it was on Saturday. Joshana Chinappa and Deepika Palikal squashed all challenge to win a gold medal in the women's double competition. In a squash competition, dominated by the Malaysians, English and New Zealanders, Deepika and Joshana's gold was a pleasant surprise.
Squash should spur India's experienced badminton campaigners Parupalli Kashyap and the duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa. Kashyap will play Derek Wong of Singapore in the men's singles final (4:30 PM IST) while Gutta and Ponappa will vie for the women's doubles gold against a Malaysian pair (6:30 PM). All three players have plenty of experience behind them. Kashyap has even been an Olympic quarterfinalist while Gutta and Ponappa have a world championship bronze.

But there is always a slip between the lip and the cup. Four Indian boxers failed in their quest to win a gold medal on Saturday. Sarita Devi and Vijender Singh were perhaps the biggest surprises. Both were favourites in their respective events.
Even if India (61 medals with 14 gold) win three gold medals on Sunday, they will finish fifth. Hosts Scotland (52 with 19 gold) will almost certainly finish fourth because third-placed Canada are way ahead with 81 medals (31 gold). England are No. 1 with 165 medals (56 gold) while Australia (132 with 45 gold) are at No. 2 position.
