Top seed Saina Nehwal crashed out of the Swiss Open losing her semifinal match against China's Wang Yihan 21-11, 21-19 in Basel on Saturday. But there was good news for India in the men's section when HS Prannoy entered the title round with a come-from-behind win against Chinese Taipei's Tzu Wei Wang. Two-time champion Saina was never in control against her Chinese rival, the tournament's third seed. Wang led from the start in both games and Saina failed to take advantage of her good record in the $120,000 Grand Prix Gold event.
Prannoy has been in fighting form. On Saturday, the Indian lost the first game 12-21, won the second 21-14 and escaped to victory winning the third 23-21. Prannoy will face the winner of the match between Germany's Marc Zwiebler and Sweden's Henri Hurskainen.
Seed No. 13, Prannoy took almost an hour to get across Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, seeded 16th, 21-18 22-24 21-9 on Thursday.
