Australia vs England, 5th Ashes Test Highlights: Joe Root and Harry Brook tamed Australia's all-pace attack with an unbroken 154-run stand on Sunday to rescue England and give them the upper hand after a rain-hit day one of the fifth and final Ashes Test. Batting after skipper Ben Stokes won the toss at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground, they steered the tourists to 211-3 when bad light forced them from the field just before tea. Subsequent rain and the risk of lightning made no further play possible. Root was not out 72 and Brook on 78, coming together with England tottering at 57-3 after losing Ben Duckett (27), Zak Crawley (16) and Jacob Bethell (10) before lunch. (Scorecard)

Australia vs England, 5th Ashes Test Live
We are back for Australia's reply. The umpires and the players of England are back out in the middle. It will be the dup of Travis Head and Jake Weatherald to open the innings for Australia. Brydon Carse will start proceedings with the ball and there's a leg slip in place as well for Head right away. Let's play...
... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...
Australia will feel they have done extremely well to keep England down to 384 here but 384 is still a big number if we are to go about the scores in this series. Also, the ball is doing a bit off the deck and the bounce has been uneven, especially in the last few overs, which will make the job of the Aussie openers all the more difficult and crucial as well. It should be a cracking last session of play, so stick around.
Play resumed after Lunch with England 336/6 in 78 overs and after a couple of overs from the part-timers, Australia switched to Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland. Joe Root remained largely unfazed and Will Jacks too did well to not get out against the extra seam movement and bounce. The duo stitched together a 50-run stand but once the two danger bowlers were taken off the attack, Jacks threw away all the hard work. Root went on to surpass 150 but Neser bowled a lovely spell and picked up 3 out of the remaining 4 wickets, including that of Root for 160.
SESSION SUMMARY - 19.3 overs, 48 runs and 4 wickets. With the end of England's first innings and 20 minutes or so left for the actual Tea break, the umpires decide to take early Tea. For the first hour, it seemed like England's session but the likes of Michael Neser and Cameron Green have come in and get rid of the English tail in a jiffy.
OUT! TIMBER! Michael Neser goes bang, bang and wraps up proceedings rather quickly. Neser bowls it fuller and around off, gets the ball to nip back in sharply. Josh Tongue looks to play down the lie but is beaten all ends up and the ball knocks over the stumps, going past the blade. Tongue departs for a two-ball duck and England are bowled out for 384.
Oh, that is a snorter from Neser. A short ball on the money, around off and at shoulder height, nipping away with extra bounce. Josh Tongue does well to sway away from the line of the ball.
Josh Tongue is the last batter in for England.
OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Oh, that is a special effort from Michael Neser and that marks the end of a marathon knock from Joe Root. Neser goes a touch wider of the crease and bowls it short at the batter. Root looks to step across and get inside the line but gets cramped up and awkwardly plays at it. The top edge is found and the ball lobs up to the leg side. Neser scampers across and puts in a brilliant dive to pouch it with both hands. Root walks back to a standing ovation from the SCG crowd as he departs for 160 (242).
On a good length and outside off, seams away quite a bit as well. Matthew Potts thinks about playting at it but does well to bail out of the shot.
Banged in short and over off, shaping away a bit. Potts sits under it and lets it through.
Hard length around offm Potts gets right behind the line and punches it down to mid off.
Back of a length and outside off, Potts rocks back and nudges it down to the right of gully where Usman Khawaja makes a good diving stop. Khawaja seems a bit hurt as he gets a blow o the already taped fingers.
Attempted bumper over middle, sails over the batter's head and Matthew Potts ducks under it well.
Very full on off and middle, Root gets across and nudges it away to deep mid-wicket for a single.
Nagging length around off, Potts leans on to defend. A maiden over from Michael Neser.
That's a beauty! Good-length delivery in the channel, angled in as well. This one hits the deck and seams away sharply with extra bounce. Potts leans on to block but is take aback and does well to not edge it behind.
On a hard length and outside off, seaming away, much easier leave this time for Potts.
Oh, that jagged back! On a good length and outside off, angling in, Matthew Potts shoulders arms but this one stays low and nearly shaves the top of off stump.
Fuller and straighter at the stumps, Potts covers the line well and blocks it off.
