Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya broke the world half-marathon record on Friday.

Wanjiru sets new record

Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya broke the world half-marathon record on Friday whilst taking the Ras Al Khaimah International Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates. The 20-year-old completed the distance in 58.53 minutes to retrieve what had previously been his own record from Haile Gebrselassie. The Ethiopian ran 58.55 in Phoenix, Arizona on January the 15th last year. Though officially a junior at the time, Wanjiru had set the previous record one year earlier, with 59.16 in Rotterdam.
