Zhang, 27, ran within himself for a 10.27, finishing second in his heat behind Japan's Ryota Yamagata, while Qatar's Femi Ogunode, orginally from Nigeria, posted the fastest time of the night with 10.14.
Qatar's Samuel Francis, who has run below 10 seconds but is Nigerian-born, limped away after qualifying for Sunday's semi-finals in 10.33, well off his personal best of 9.99.

"I had a good run, I am nursing an injury right now. I am just trying to get through the rounds first," he said.
Ogunode, who is also defending his 2010 Asian Games 200m and 400m titles, returned to action in January after a two-year ban for testing positive for clenbuterol.
