Bangladesh are firmly on the back foot now when it comes to Group B. They will need a big win over Afghanistan to keep qualification hopes alive. Lose to them, and they're almost certainly out of the tournament. Apart from Shamim and Jaker, not many positives to take home today.

Sri Lanka have been almost perfect today. In a group that is expected to be tightly-fought, it is important to win games like this. Sri Lanka put in a superb performance, led by their bowlers Thushara, Chameera and Hasaranga, and finished off by Nissanka and Mishara.

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 6 wickets! Good running between the wickets to get the final couple of runs. Kamil Mishara ends unbeaten on 46, and don't forget about Pathum Nissanka's 50. A terrific victory, with 5.2 overs to spare!

Maximum from captain Charith Asalanka! Heaved over mid-wicket by the Sri Lankan skipper. Pitched on the off-stump but smashed towards the other side of the ground. Just 4 more runs to win it!

Stunning catch by Mustafizur Rahman! Pick-up shot from Shanaka, but a superb diving catch at fine-leg by The Fizz. 2 wickets in the space of 6 balls. Is there still some hope for Bangladesh to pull off a miracle?

Nissanka departs! End of a fine knock. Nissanka steps out, tries to clear it over square-leg, but finds the fielder. Mahedi Hasan picks up a wicket. Perhaps too little, too late for Bangladesh, but you never know.

50 for Pathum Nissanka! The Sri Lankan batter has played a composed knock -- six boundaries and a maximum. He also completes 2,000 T20I runs in the process. Measured innings from the opener, and he has all but assured victory for his country tonight.

Nissanka also becomes the fastest Sri Lankan to reach 2,000 T20I runs (68 innings), beating Kusal Perera (76 innings).

Another boundary in the Rishad Hossain over. 18 runs off it, Sri Lanka now going at more than 10 an over. Wide again from Rishad, and whipped away between square-leg and fine-leg for a boundary. Oh, how quickly the tables have turned.

6, 4, 4! Kamil Mishara makes Bangladesh pay! Seam up from Shoriful, and helped over mid-wicket for a maximum by Mishara. Next ball is a length one, wide, and cut away for 4. Right after that, he slams it through the covers, beautiful drive. Mishara making his lifeline count big time here.

Oh dear! Kamil Mishara doesn't connect well on his pull shot, Mahedi Hasan trying to take a diving catch at short mid-wicket but he drops it. Couple of bobbles and it pops out of his hand in the end. Mishara is really struggling at the crease, but how costly will that drop be?

Leg byes, and 4! Nissanka tries a pull, the ball sticks low, hits him on the thigh pad and runs away for 4 through third-man. Bit unlucky for Tanzim, but valuable runs for Sri Lanka. Nonetheless, a good start by Bangladesh with the ball.

Pathum Nissanka with a boundary! Mustafizur doesn't get a second over, Tanzim enters the attack, pitches it short first up, and Nissanka cuts it square for 4. Through the hands of a diving Bangladesh fielder.

OUT! Mustafizur Rahman strikes in his first over, and Kusal Mendis departs! Thick outside edge, and a sharp diving catch by Litton Das behind the stumps. Bangladesh have the early wicket they so badly needed, defending such a low total.

Mustafizur, a man who has played for SRH, CSK and DC among others in the IPL, making the instant impact with the new ball.

Shoriful Islam with a solid first over. Concedes just 4 runs, as Nissanka and Mendis don't go for any aggressive strokes. Just settling into the run chase here. The required run-rate is just 7, so it's quite gettable.

A great recovery by Bangladesh! They looked down and out, and were staring at a total of under 100 when they were reduced to 54/5 at one stage. But a record 86-run sixth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh between Shamim and Jaker. Their total may still be below par, but they've mustered something worth defending.

Jaker Ali survives, and how! Hasaranga's delivery kisses the off-stump, the stumps light up, but the bail doesn't fall! All the Sri Lankan players went up in celebration momentarily, but their delight has been cut short.

Nine overs done, and finally Bangladesh reach the total of 50. Apart from Litton Das, it has been a hugely disappointing batting performance from them. So far, the 'Naagin rivalry' has been dominated by Sri Lanka.

DRS to the rescue! Litton trapped on the pads by Hasaranga, another big appeal, and the umpire gives it out. Litton takes the review, and replays show that there was an inside edge. The captain survives, and Bangladesh breathe a sigh of relief.

Three boundaries in a row! Litton Das switches gears, and gets some much-needed runs for Bangladesh. First one chipped over the 30-yard circle, the second much better and whipped square, and the third delicately placed down third man.

Finally a boundary for Bangladesh! Hit by the new batter Mahedi Hasan. Short of a length from Thushara, Mahedi opens the face of the bat and drives it down the ground. It's taken Bangladesh nearly 5 overs to get their first 4!

Direct hit! RUN OUT! Just one ball after seeing a catch dropped, Towhid Hridoy has to depart anyway. Hridoy plays it towards mid-wicket, the batters try to run three, but a fantastic throw by Kamil Mishara means that Hridoy is well short of his ground!

Dropped! Nearly the third wicket as Towhid Hridoy doesn't get good connection. The ball goes high in the air, SL captain Charith Asalanka running backwards but cannot hold on to the catch. How costly will that miss be?

Bangladesh finally get their first run. It has taken them 14 balls to get their first run. Litton Das with a flick down to the leg-side and they pick up a single. Three more runs come in the third over. Bangladesh still in a heap of trouble.

The rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is now often referred to as the 'Naagin' rivalry. 'Naagin' refers to snake. It originated in 2018, when Bangladesh spinner Nazmul Islam celebrated a wicket against Sri Lanka with a snake-themed celebration. However, after the match, Sri Lanka dished out the celebration themselves.

The dance has now become a popular theme of the rivalry, giving the match extra spice.

Sri Lanka have won the toss and opted to bowl! Interesting decision made by their captain Charith Asalanka. He also confirms that star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is back in action for Sri Lanka to start the tournament.

The qualification to the Super Four from Group A is expected to be a close fight. Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are all closely-matched teams on paper and, thus, every match will play a crucial part in the qualification.

It is important to remember that Sri Lanka are technically the reigning champions. While India did indeed win the previous edition (in 2023), Sri Lanka won the last Asia Cup that was played in the T20I format, in 2022. 

We are just 15 minutes away from the scheduled toss time. The match is supposed to get underway at 6:30 PM local time (8:00 PM IST). It will be interesting to see what decision is taken by the toss-winning captain.

This match holds immense importance for Bangladesh. With one win on the board in their opening game against Hong Kong, they can put one foot into the Super Four with another victory today. But they will have their work cut out against a strong and unpredictable Sri Lanka side.

Sri Lanka are playing their first game of the Asia Cup 2025. Led by Charith Asalanka, they pose a number of potent T20I stars like Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana and Kamindu Mendis. They'll hope to get off to a winning start tonight.
