Japan's 11th-seeded Kei Nishikori was ousted in the first round of the US Open on Monday, falling to British qualifier Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Nishikori made 38 unforced errors and failed on seven of his nine break-point chances, including all five he managed in the final set, to fall after one hour and 57 minutes.
With his elimination, five-time US Open champion Roger Federer loses the highest-ranked rival in his eighth of the draw and a major obstacle in his path to the quarter-finals, where he could meet Rafael Nadal for the first time at the US Open.
