Puig takes the court later Wednesday and will be looking to match what Lesia Tsurenko achieved when the Ukrainian qualifier upset Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 6-1. The 54th-ranked Tsurenko needed only 77 minutes to complete the second-round victory on the grandstand court.
The 21-year-old Muguruza has risen to number nine in the world after her run to the final at Wimbledon.
The Spaniard lost to Serena Williams in the final after beating four top-15 players at the All-England Club. The top-ranked Williams will play her third-round match Thursday night in Toronto.
Fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia also advanced to the third round after she toppled Belarus' Olga Govortsova 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).
In other second-round matches, Russia's Daria Gavrilova beat seventh-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Slovenia's Polona Hercog topped 11th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-2, 6-7 (7/2), 7-5.
