The Archery Association of India (AAI) on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to the archers and coaching staff of the Indian men's compound team after they failed to turn up for a bronze medal play-off match in the recently-held World University Games.
The AAI asked all the participating archers of the team and its coaches to send their reply within 48 hours, failing which strict disciplinary action would be taken against them.
"The AAI president (VK Malhotra) has taken a strong note of the incident. It was really shocking. It is a serious issue. We have issued a show-cause notice to the concerned archers and their coaches. They have to send their explanation withing 48 hours," AAI treasurer Virender Sachdeva told PTI.
The Indian men's compound team comprising Gurwinder Singh, Kanwalpreet Singh and Aman was not present at the start of the bronze medal play-off match against Italy at 10 am local time in Gwangju, South Korea.
As per the World Archery rules if a team is not present at the start of a final match then that game is forfeited.
Even though coach Jiwanjot Singh reasoned that they had to forego the match because of a broken bow, media reports state that the boys failed to arrive at the venue because they were out sightseeing.
