In a sensational revelation, London Olympic Games silver medallist Sushil Kumar said authorities turned a blind eye after he reported an 'offer' to lose the 2010 world championship final against a Russian wrestler in Moscow in return for huge sums of money. In an exclusive chat with NDTV on Friday, Sushil said: "I had told even in 2010 about this incident, but nobody responded. I'm not in FILA (world body for wrestling) or any other federation, so can't say if the Russian's medal should be taken away." (Also read: Sachin Tendulkar told me to stay away from fixers)
Sushil made the headlines on Friday morning when he told a leading newspaper that he was asked to lose the 2010 world wrestling 66kg freestyle final bout in return for crores. Just hours before the match against Russian Alan Gogayev, Sushil said he was asked to 'fix' the final.
"I was approached through a coach to 'throw' the final bout. I was offered about 3 crores...wrestling is huge in Russia, and they didn't expect an Indian to enter the final," Sushil told NDTV. Sushil easily won the final 3-1.
Advocating the "strictest punishment" for the match fixers, Sushil said wrestling should get rid of corrupt officials. Wrestling is struggling to make the Rio Olympics in 2016 and Sushil's revelation is bound to hurt the sport.
Apart from a silver at the 2012 London Games, the 66kg freestyle expert had won bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the gold medal in Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2010. He will compete in Hungary next.
