Moscow:
World weightlifting legend Vasily Alekseyev, two-time Olympic champion (1972 and 1976), has died from heart problems, local media reported on Friday.
The 69-year-old Alekseyev, who passed away in a clinic in Munich, Germany, also won eight world championships and eight European events in addition to seven Soviet titles during his career.
He set 80 world records, including the total 645-kilogram mark across three lifts. That mark will stand as the event is no longer contested.
