Gautam Gambhir: "This is exactly the pitch we wanted. The pitch curator was very helpful. This wasn't an unplayable wicket. The skills of the players aren't the issue. We need to, individually and collectively, keep talking about how to absorb pressure. We need to embrace pressure."

Simon Harmer wins the 'Player of the Match' award. No surprises there. 8 wickets, 4 in each innings. He was absolutely incredible today. 14 overs, 4 maidens, 21 runs conceded, 4 wickets taken. Match figures of 8/51.

This is the second-lowest total that India have ever failed to chase down in Test cricket. The lowest came in 1997, when India failed to chase 120 against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1997. The third-lowest since that game was the 147 India failed to chase against NZ at the Wankhede last year.

"You can't dwell too much on defeats like this. We should've chased down a total of 120-odd, but the pressure kept building because we lost wickets," says Rishabh Pant in the post-match presentation.

A famous win for reigning World Test Championship (WTC) winners South Africa. Their first victory in India since February 2010, a gap of nearly 16 years! And they earned it against the odds. The possibility of that happening seems highly unlikely given that he has been ruled out of the Test altogether. But we did see Chris Woakes come out to bat with one working arm, so never say never!

India's last set batter departs! Washington Sundar, who has defended so resolutely all day, has been undone by part-timer Aiden Markram. Outside edge, and he's caught by Simon Harmer at first slip. No Shubman Gill, so Kuldeep Yadav is in at No. 8.

In a recent interview, CAB President Sourav Ganguly confirmed that the track at the Eden Gardens was prepared after the Gautam Gambhir-led Indian camp requested for a pitch to not be watered for 4 days. Looks like India's wish for a spin-friendly pitch is dangerously close to backfiring.

GONE! Another massive wicket! Simon Harmer strikes, who else. Ravindra Jadeja is out, LBW! Jadeja goes to block, but the ball crashes onto his toe first. Umpire gives it out. Jadeja takes the DRS, but hawkeye confirms it to be out.

Dramatic scenes! Rishabh Pant went for a reverse-sweep on the first ball, but the ball ricocheted off him and was caught by the fielder at forward short-leg. Keshav Maharaj and the South African team were off celebrating, but the umpire did not raise his finger.

SA take the review, and UltraEdge confirms it hit Pant on the arm, not the glove.

Oh dear! Just as we were praising Dhruv Jurel's composure, he's squandered his wicket with a poor shot. A dragged-down delivery from Simon Harmer, Jurel saw the opportunity and went for the big hit, but it goes straight to the fielder at deep mid-wicket. One fielder in the deep on the leg-side, and Jurel has found him.

Dhruv Jurel has looked extremely composed so far. He's faced 33 balls, scoring 13, including three boundaries. Jurel slammed two centuries for India A against SA A in the unofficial Test preceding this match, and he's translating that form into international cricket. 

Looks like Gautam Gambhir's call to send Jurel as Shubman Gill's No. 4 replacement is paying off.

Meanwhile, a six-member medical board has been formed at the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata in order to treat Shubman Gill following his neck injury. X-ray and MRI scans have been conducted, and he was initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Dhruv Jurel is the last remaining recognized right-handed batter in the Indian batting order. After him, it's a series of left handers - Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav! India will hope it doesn't get to Kuldeep.

Lunch on Day 1. Phew! That was some session of cricket, but one that has brought South Africa right back into the game. Temba Bavuma and Corbin Bosch played excellent knocks with the bat, and then Marco Jansen made a devastating impact with ball in hand.

India lost both openers for a combined score of 1, and now their hopes are pinned on two batters completely unfamiliar to their batting positions.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul's aggregate score of 1 is the lowest total by Indian openers in a Test innings at home since Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag did the same against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 2010.

Boundary for Washington Sundar! Marco Jansen can consider himself unlucky. Washington Sundar gets a thick outside edge, and the ball races away for 4 past gully. Imperative for Washington and Jurel to survive Jansen's new ball spell.

Team India will have to script the highest-successful run chase at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The record fourth innings chase so far at the venue is 117, also coincidentally achieved by India against South Africa, back in 2004!

LBW! What an over from Mohammed Siraj! 2 wickets in 4 balls for the India pacer. Toe-crushing yorker to Maharaj, who is hit plumb on the foot. SA take the review, but it's as plumb as it gets. Temba Bavuma stays not out on 55.

Siraj strikes! A wonderful delivery by Siraj, who makes up for the DRS disappointment just two balls later. The off-stump is broken into two pieces! Simon Harmer left the ball, but it swung back in and knocked him over!

DRS comes to the rescue! South African captain Temba Bavuma was given out LBW after being trapped on the pads by Mohammed Siraj. But replays showed the ball hit his front pad, which was positioned near leg-stump. Hawkeye confirms that the ball would've missed leg-stump by a mile. Not a good decision by the umpire. India's joy cut short.

Mohammed Siraj has been introduced into the attack by Rishabh Pant. The spinners have been unable to make a big impact and South Africa have now notched up their 150. The lead is up to 120.

A hugely positive update: Shubman Gill's condition has significantly improved and his pain has lessened overnight, NDTV sources can confirm. MRI reports have shown no serious issues.

The Indian captain has also tuned in to the Day 3 action from his hospital bed!

South Africa have begun really well with the bat, and Sunil Gavaskar on commentary states that it could be the effect of the heavy roller on the pitch. Remember, the batting side gets to choose if they want the roller to be used on the pitch before the start of day's play.

Temba Bavuma becomes the first batter in the match to enter the 40s. The South African captain has been resilient and hugely crucial to his side's innings so far. How much he scores could well decide the outcome of the game.

Only once has a team ever chased down a target of more than 100 in the fourth innings of a Test match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This happened in 2004, coincidentally in an India-SA game, with the hosts coming out on top.

With Shubman Gill being ruled out for the rest of the match, India will have no choice but to play with only 10 batters in their second innings. This could end up being pivotal if the match goes down to the wire.

The spinners played a huge role for both sides on Day 2. A total of 15 wickets fell on Day 2, with spinners taking 12 of them. All 7 South African wickets in the second innings have been taken by Indian spinners, with Ravindra Jadeja being the main destructor, having scalped 4.

Unless South Africa put up a stiff resistance and stick it out with the bat for more than a session, there is a good chance the match comes to an end today. Currently, the Proteas lead by only 63 runs. However, with the Eden pitch turning square, even a target of around 100 would be a challenge for the Indian batters.

In Shubman Gill's absence, it will be vice-captain Rishabh Pant who will take charge of things on the cricket field. Pant impressed with his bowling and fielding changes in the final session yesterday, as India managed to pick up 7 South African wickets.

The pre-match reports suggested that the Eden Gardens pitch will only aid spinners from the second day onwards. However, what happened on the field was quite contrasting. The match seems to be heading towards a result on Day 3, with spinners enjoying plenty of assistance since the start of Day 2. The development is bound to trigger an intense debate on social media. 

Shubman Gill has been kept in ICU for observation. A critical care panel has also been formed for the India captain, as a precautionary measure. Here's the complete medical report on Shubman Gill's situation.

India all-rounder Axar Patel is keen to not have his team chase a target of more than 125 runs in the Kolkata Test. With the pitch expected to behave even more erratically, batting on Day 3 is expected to be even tougher. 

"From one end it feels like it's going straight, but from the other end everything is happen. Have to play attacking cricket as a batter. Have to convert loose balls and keep an attacking mindset. Can't have a defensive mindset because you're never in. When you know there's something in it for the bowlers, you can get carried away by the thought of bowling some magic balls. Patience is key. If we can keep them under 125, it should be chaseable," Axar said.

On Shubman Gill's participation for the Guwahati Test, it will depend on the speed of his recovery and it is impossible to say for sure either way at this point in time. There is doubt but all hope is not lost yet. The management and fans are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping he recovers faster than expected and makes it back.

It has been reliably learned that Shubman Gill will stay in the hospital today. He will have no further role in this Test match. The India skipper has been admitted under Dr. Saptarshi Basu. A medical board has also been formed, but only as a precautionary measure. The board includes specialists like neurosurgeons, neurologists, and cardiologists.
