A double hundred by Joe Root helped England continue their dominant display with the bat against India, on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test match, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The visitors were 555 for eight at stumps after 180 overs, with skipper Root slamming 218 runs from 377 balls in his 100th Test match. England began the day on a good note, with Ben Stokes and Root building a steady partnership. Stokes registered a half-century, scoring 82 off 118 deliveries. After the departure of Stokes, Ollie Pope (34) made a decent contribution and supported his captain. Meanwhile, Jos Buttler also played a fine knock, and added 30 runs to the scoreboard. Tailenders Dom Bess and Jack Leach were the two unbeaten batsmen at stumps and will be aiming to add some quickfire runs to their side's first innings total on Day 3. India's bowling department failed to really find their footing against the opposition batsmen, with Ravichandran Ashwin adding to his tally from Day 1. Ashwin took the crucial wicket of Pope, with Shahbaz Nadeem registering two dismissals. Veteran fast bowler Ishant Sharma also scalped two dismissals. India will be aiming to grab quick wickets on Day 3 and wipe out England's tailenders.
