Kolkata Test, Day 2: It's all about captain Cook and England, India under the pump
December 06, 2012 21:53
Alastair Cook scripted a fairy tale for England on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test after India, despite Dhoni's efforts, capitulated for 316 on what looked like a good wicket to bat on.

The day started on a sorry note for India who would have been looking to add at least another 100 runs to their overnight score of 273/7. Monty Panesar dismissed both Zaheer Khan (plumb lbw) and Ishant Sharma (yorked) in quick succession to hamper MS Dhoni's efforts who was looking MSD of the old. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni though, did look to do the best he could to get some runs. He hit a couple of big sixes off Panesar in one over to bring cheers to an otherwise 'noisy' but majorly disappointed crowd. (Photo credit: BCCI)

MSD completed a well deserved fifty to take India's score to 316. Pragyan Ojha gave him good company with a 0* off 19 balls. Eventually, Dhoni was dismissed by a searing bouncer from Steven Finn, who bowled well without much luck. (Photo credit: BCCI)

England had an early reprieve in their innings when skipper Alastair Cook was batting on 17. 'Newly appointed' slip fielder Cheteshwar Pujara had the 'brainwave' to wear shin pads and accessories in the most important position in Tests and promptly dropped the in form Cook. England never looked back, India could not look ahead. (Photo credit: BCCI)

Nick Compton gave his captain solid support with a well constructed 57 off 137 balls. The feature of their innings was also their running between the wickets as Indian fielders faltered badly on a pedestrian day for them. Particularly bad were Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh. (Photo credit: BCCI)

India had little to hold on to but despair as England marched along, sometimes cautiously, sometimes with aggression but always confident. Pragyan Ojha was the only one to get a wicket in the entire day for India as he trapped Compton in front. The dismissal was controversial though as umpire Rod Tucker first nodded his head in disagreement then gave it out. Replays showed that it had gone off the glove. England, though, were right on top. He has just been brilliant, not just in this series but overall in Test matches. Cook is the youngest and the quickest to 7000 runs in Test cricket. He has five centuries in his five Test matches as England skipper. He has the most number of centuries by an English batsman ever. Need we say more?
Of the 216/1 that England scored on Day 2, Cook got 136 and is going strong. He has scored almost 500 runs in the series so far and still 3 innings (probably) are left to play. Beware India! (Photo credit: BCCI)
