Nainital:
Nainital Lake, one of the most picturesque locations in Uttaranchal is no doubt a huge tourist attraction.
But an equally big attraction in Nainital is the Traders' Cup hockey tournament. The tournament is unique since it is played on gravel.
But this year the event is even more special as in the 83-year-old history of this event, a Pakistani club from Multan has come to play.
"We are here to spread love and brotherhood amongst the two countries. This is one of the oldest hockey tournaments in the world and it is because of the efforts of the local hockey association that we are here," said Amanullah, Former Captain, Pakistan Hockey Team.
Warm reception
While the Pakistani club side was taken aback by the beauty of the city, what really caught their attention was the reception that they got from the locals who came out in full force to enjoy the game.
"Words cannot describe the love and affection that we have got from the people over here, people have been so co-operative. The hospitality has been so good and we are feeling at home," said Gulam Murtaza, Captain.
Message of peace
With relations between the two governments improving day by day, players from both sides hope that this will reflect on the sports field especially when it comes to procuring visas for sportspersons.
"The aim of bringing the Pakistani hockey team here was to spread the message of peace, love and brotherhood amongst the people and to carry on the good work that the government of India is doing," said G L Shah, General Secretary, District Sports Authority, Nainital.
The Nainital Sports Authority is now hoping that the visit of the Pakistani team is not a one-off and will continue for many years to come.
