Leafs surge past Rangers 2-1

Mats Sundin's breakaway goal snapped a third-period tie and lifted the surging Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday. Sundin, who also assisted on Alexei Ponikarovsky's tying power-play goal in the second period, hit the 20-goal mark for the 16th straight season every one spent in the NHL. That was enough to give the Leafs their fifth win in six games, including four on the road. Brendan Shanahan scored for New York, which had a two-game winning streak broken. The Rangers and Maple Leafs entered tied for ninth in the Eastern Conference, but Toronto which had a vocal band of supporters in the stands jumped into a three-way deadlock for seventh. Andrew Raycroft, in his 13th straight start, made 37 saves as Toronto improved to 2-0 on its five-game trip one night after winning at Carolina. Shanahan nearly tied it with under 5 minutes left, but Raycroft stopped him at the left post. Ducks 2, Coyotes 1 At Anaheim, California, Travis Moen and Andy McDonald scored the tying and go-ahead goals less than 1 1/2 minutes apart in the third period, Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 24 saves and Anaheim beat Phoenix for its ninth straight home win over the Coyotes. Curtis Joseph stopped the first 29 shots he faced and was trying to make Fredrik Sjostrom's first-period goal stand up when the Pacific Division leaders finally got on the board with 12:27 to play. Joseph stopped Moen's 15-foot backhander in the slot, but the Ducks' forward regained possession in the right corner and skated into the circle before scoring his seventh goal of the season on a wrist shot. Phoenix defenseman Travis Roche received an interference penalty on a delayed call preceding Moen's goal, and the Ducks capitalized on the ensuing power play. Oilers 5, Blue Jackets 2 At Edmonton, Alberta, Raffi Torres scored twice and Fernando Pisani had a goal and two assists to lead Edmonton to a win over Columbus. Ryan Smyth and Petr Sykora also scored for the Oilers, who won their second straight to finish a five-game homestand 3-2. Edmonton also moved within four points of eighth place Minnesota in the Western Conference. David Vyborny and Fredrik Modin had the goals for Columbus, which snapped a four-game winning streak.
